Commercial Heating Oil FAQs
Prema Heating Oil, also known as Prema 35, is a drop-in replacement for diesel and other industrial heating oils, specifically designed for use in commercial boiler applications, such as those found in factories, warehouses, distilleries and other industrial settings. It is also suitable for space heating systems and dryers.
It meets the British Standard for heating oil, BS2869 Class D and is comparable to other “35 second” heating oils.
Prema Heating Oil is strictly prohibited for use in mobile or stationary plant machinery. It is an industrial heating oil intended solely for use in heating applications. It must be stored separately from diesel and other fuels used in vehicles, plant and electricity generation.
- Space heating and central heating: Apartment blocks, schools, universities, hospitals, government buildings, hotels, factories, and commercial buildings.
- Industrial boiler plants: Food and beverage manufacturing facilities, dairies, distilleries, and animal feed mills.
- Drying and commercial heating: Grain dryers, metal and glass processing, quarries and asphalt manufacture.
- Other industrial heating oil applications which currently use diesel, kerosene or heavy, processed and reclaimed oils (PFO, HFO etc.)
- Winter-Grade Performance: Prema Heating Oil boasts a low Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFFP) and pour point, making it suitable for use throughout the year, even in the coldest winter months. This eliminates the need for seasonal fuel switching, reducing operational complexity and minimizing the risk of fuel-related issues.
- Enhanced Stability: Prema Heating Oil is formulated to resist microbial contamination and waxing, ensuring consistent fuel flow and preventing potential equipment damage caused by clogged pipes and filters.
- Cleaner Emissions: Say goodbye to sooty emissions. Prema Heating Oil is clean burning, eliminates smoke and soot and reduces toxic emissions.
- Reduced Maintenance Issues: No fouling of heating plates or filter and line blockages. Reduced downtime.
- Superior Quality: At Prema, we meticulously control the entire fuel production process, ensuring the highest quality standards are met at every stage.
Making the switch to Prema Heating Oil is straightforward. It’s fully miscible and can be easily mixed with existing diesel stocks. You can simply top up your tank and continue your industrial heating applications without interruption.
Our team of technical experts are here to ensure a smooth switch to Prema Heating Oil. We can:
- Evaluate your existing systems to ensure they are compatible with your new fuel.
- Inspect your storage tanks and advise whether they would benefit from a clean prior to switching.
- Help you assess whether Prema Heating Oil will solve any existing problems like sooty emissions or maintenance issues.
- Offer price risk management strategies to help with budgeting.
- Advise on any minor adjustments which will help you get the most out of your new fuel e.g. burner settings.
Prema Heating oil offers excellent value. Our customers typically find they save a significant amount of money compared to their previous fuel. Our consistent quality also means they know exactly how much fuel they will need to give the heat they require.
If you currently use diesel for heating applications you will see your costs fall dramatically by switching to a dedicated heating oil.
We also offer price risk management options to help with budgeting.
Prema Bio Heating Oil provides a carbon emissions reduction of more than 90% when compared to traditional mineral heating oils.
Yes. To ensure optimal flow and prevent waxing, Prema Bio Heating Oil requires a heated storage tank and a heated ring main connected directly to the burner.
No. This specific formulation is strictly regulated for use as a heating oil. It is prohibited for use as a road fuel or as a fuel for any motor, engine, or machinery.
The fuel provides highly competitive pricing that is similar to Prema HVO B50, making it a cost-effective solution for facilities that have implemented the required heated storage infrastructure.
Prema HVO100 is a 100% Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. It is a synthesised, pure paraffinic, and fossil-free fuel used as a direct, renewable replacement for red diesel (gas oil) and kerosene in commercial boiler and dryer applications.
No. Standard biodiesel contains FAME, which can absorb water, suffer from poor cold-weather performance, and develop bacterial growth (‘diesel bug’) during long-term storage. Prema HVO100 is 100% FAME-free and highly stable product.
Yes. The fuel is fully miscible with existing conventional diesel and gas oil stocks. You can introduce Prema HVO100 into your current system immediately without modifying burners or draining the tank.
While the per-litre cost varies against standard fossil fuels, the combination of high combustion efficiency, zero infrastructure modification costs, and the elimination of maintenance downtime provides a competitive total cost of ownership. If switching from standard road diesel for heating applications, procurement costs are measurably reduced.
No. Prema 35 is strictly for use as a heating oil. It must not be used as a road fuel or to operate any engine, motor, or machinery.
No. Prema 35 operates as a drop-in replacement with identical physical properties to diesel, so no requirement for burner modifications just a visit from your combustion engineer to fine tune the burner and thus achieve maximum combustion efficiency
The fuel features a Cold Filter Plugging Point of -12°C. This specification ensures performance is completely unaffected by cold weather.
Unlike diesel oil, Prema 35 contains zero biodiesel or FAME thus has a long shelf life compared to the three months recommended for diesel.
Prema B50 is a blended commercial heating fuel consisting of 50% premium conventional heating oil and 50% renewable biofuel (HVO). It is engineered to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 50% while maintaining the performance characteristics of a standard fossil fuel.
No. Prema B50 is strictly 100% FAME-free. This specification ensures the fuel will not absorb water, develop microbial bacterial growth, or cause filter blockages during long-term storage.
No. The fuel has a Cold Filter Plugging Point of -12°C, meaning it will not wax or freeze in severe UK winter temperatures. It operates efficiently using standard, unheated outdoor storage infrastructure.
No. Prema B50 is a rebated product specified exclusively for industrial and commercial heating applications. It is strictly prohibited by law for use as a fuel in any road vehicle, motor, or machinery.
